In August 2005, volunteers from the faculty, local community, Environmental Residents program, Eco-House, and Waste Not attended first-year orientation picnics to help facilitate recycling. Organized by the Environmental Residents, the events were a success. Volunteers turned out to stand by the "garbage" stations, which consisted of a waste bin and two blue recycling bins for aluminum cans and plastic bottles. As people would go to throw away their trash, the volunteers help them sort the materials into their proper bins. The volunteer efforts did not go unappreciated as parents, faculty, first years and returning students offered their thanks, as they emptied their trays. The volunteers had a great time and look forward to facilitating recycling at more University events in the future.
