The Environmental Residents (under the leadership of Mary Bruce Gray, Haley Merrill, Traci Meikle, and Heather Turbeville) are running an "Eco-Cup" for the month of February, 2005. Dorms are invited to compete to save energy and water and to learn more about living sustainably. There will be a number of events including walk-and-learn signs and such...here is the tentative schedule of events. More will be added soon!
All the uneaten food & drink from 10:30am-1:30pm will be weighed. This will be done twice, once now and again at the end of EcoCup (see below).
Results of previous day's waste weighing in McClurg will be posted on a table at McClurg entry. Students will be invited to fill out a survey on why they waste food. Also, there will be tips on how to conserve energy & water in dorms.
James and Dylan will be playing in the Pub from 9pm-Midnight
Discussion/Introduction led by Prof. Sid Brown
Put out by the Union of Concerned Scientists, "Prominent scientists and religious leaders including Nobel laureate Dr. Henry Kendall and Rabbi Ismar Schorsch comment on the need to protect the environment in this promotional video, which alternates in its approach between scientific perspectives and the Biblical Genesis story. Produced by Joseph Seamans for the Union of Concerned Scientists; narrated by James Earl Jones." Inspirational and really lovely film.
Discussion/Introduction led by Prof. Ken Smith
"The Global Banquet, Politics of Food begins in rural North America and demonstrates how a handful of multi-national corporations have come to dominate our food system, driving small family farmers both in the U.S. and the developing world out of existence.
Free trade policies have manipulated control of local markets, destroying the ability of developing nations to feed themselves and perpetuating structures that promote hunger. Highly industrialized food production has led to focus on shareholder profits, resulting in a concentration of wealth, thousands of poverty-wage jobs, and environmental destruction. The documentary features a variety of voices from the north and south that expose the injustices and suggest progressive ways of reshaping the global food system."
Discussion/Introduction led by Prof. Keith-Lucas
"Exploring the relationship between ecology and psychology, this video suggests that many of our social and psychological problems, such as isolation and dysfunctionality, stem from the refusal to acknowledge our fundamental connectedness to the rest of the human/nonhuman world. Realizing this essential connectedness is crucial for healing."
A truck will be parked in front of the B.C. which will contain all recyclable items from Gorgas & Quintard that people threw away instead of recycling.
Contest in the Pub! Teams will compete and test their knowledge of environmental issues. Questions taken from facts posted during previous weeks. So pay attention to those walk-n-learn posters & table tents in McClurg! Then sign up with some friends and show everyone how much you know.
Boykin works at the University of Georgia to make all buildings there more environmentally sound. She will be speaking about green building in general and specifically about Sewanee and what we can do to be more green.
All the uneaten food & drink from 10:30am-1:30pm will be weighed.
