In our ongoing efforts to increase environmental awareness and responsiveness among students, faculty, and staff,
the University of the South establishes its Environmental Resident Program. Spread throughout the dormitories
with an average of one person per dorm are students who are trained in
environmental issues such as campus environmentalism and sustainability and global sustainable development.
These students have three primary responsibilities:
- they educate students in their residential area about environmental issues,
- they act to encourage sustainable living, and
- they coordinate their building's recycling program.
One or two of these students oversee the program, reporting to two members of the
faculty and staff. In short, we are cultivating student leaders on environmental issues.

Blessing of the Bikes Fall '06
In Fall 2004, the Environmental Residents organized & participated in
major orientation recycling events.
(Pictures & more about event.)
In Spring 2004, the Vice Chancellor was convinced by Environmental
Residents and others to sign the
Talloires Declaration.
In fall of 2003 and 2005, the Environmental Residents sold over 240
recycled toothbrushes
to Sewanee students, faculty, and staff. Turned out to be a
great holiday gift idea.
Programs similar to our Environmental Resident program are popping up all over the country.
The best way to keep track of them is to use these few webpages:
The Sewanee Student Assembly approved a "Renewable Energy Resolution" committed
to phasing in a switch to more green energy beginning in 2005.
Download text of Resolution & Presentation to the Regents (power point)
The university has advertised a commmitment to
purchasing green energy 5% in 2005, 10% in 2006, and 15% in 2007 and thereafter.
Update Feb'05 - The Regents passed the green power fee. Beginning August 2005,
$15 per student will go to purchasing clean renewable energy!
This is an amazing
step forward for Sewanee, as we take part in the clean energy
revolution!!

- Brower Youth Award
Earth Island Institute established the Brower Youth Award to honor founder
and legendary activist David R. Brower. The award manifests the Earth

Institute's commitment to growing new leaders and the inextricable link of
our physical surroundings and the human condition. The Brower Youth Award
recognizes the efforts of environmental and social justice leaders (ages
13 to 22) living in the U.S. The six winners of the award each receive $3,000
in cash, a trip to California for the award ceremony and Yosemite camping
trip, and ongoing access to resources and opportunities to further their
work at Earth Island Institute. The application deadline is _usually_ mid-April.
Visit the website for application guidelines and forms.
- Udall Environmental Scholarship
Each year, the Morris K. Udall Foundation awards eighty $5000 scholarships
and 50 $350 honorable mentions to college sophomores and juniors who
intend
to pursue careers relating to the environment, or who intend to pursue
careers in tribal public policy or Native American health care and are
Native American or Alaska Native. See website for more information.
But you have to act fast- the deadline to apply is _usually_ early March and you
first need to be nominated by your institution which can take time and
require earlier application!
